中央研究院历史语言研究所民国时期国立中央研究院下属的研究历史、语言的学术机构。1928年，中央研究院院长蔡元培命傅斯年等三人负责筹建，同年于广州成立，傅斯年任所长。次年迁北平（今北京），所址在北海静心斋。1936年迁至南京鸡鸣寺。傅斯年主张历史、语言的研究要运用新材料，发现新问题,采取新方法。他认为近代历史学只是史料学,应当用自然科学提供的一切方法、手段来整理现存的所有史料；唯有发现和扩充史料，直接研究史料的工作才具有学术意义。因此该所成立后,工作重点放在:①安阳殷墟发掘和甲骨文的研究整理；②西南少数民族语言、习俗的调查；③西北考古。目的在于扩大历史、语言研究材料，该所先后设历史组、语言组、考古组、人类学四个组。设研究员、副研究员、助理研究员和助理员等职称。图书设备、出土文物资料都很齐全。该所集中了当时一批著名学者，如陈寅恪、赵元任、罗常培、李方桂、李济、董作宾等，一方面继承了乾嘉学派治学精神，一方面汲取了包括西方近代新史学、人文科学和自然科学在内的研究方法，在历史、语言等许多领域都有卓著贡献，十年间组织殷墟发掘十五次，取得了世界瞩目的重大成果。重要出版物有《历史语言研究所集刊》，1928年创刊,商务印书馆出版发行,至1949年共出版二十一本（每本四分册）。此外,还有《专刊》、《单刊》、《集刊外编》、《史料丛刊》、《田野考古报告》、《人类学集刊》、《中国人类学报告》等。抗日战争爆发后，该所辗转于长沙、昆明，1940年迁四川南溪李庄，1946年迁回南京。所长始终由傅斯年担任。1949年迁至台湾。
