插齿机使用插齿刀按展成法加工内、外直齿和斜齿圆柱齿轮以及其他齿形件的齿轮加工机床。插齿机主要用于加工多联齿轮和内齿轮，加附件后还可加工齿条。在插齿机上使用专门刀具还能加工非圆齿轮、不完全齿轮和内外成形表面，如方孔、六角孔、带键轴（键与轴联成一体）等。加工精度可达7～5级(JB179-83)，最大加工工件直径达12米。插齿机分立式和卧式两种，前者使用最普遍。立式插齿机又有刀具让刀和工件让刀两种形式。高速和大型插齿机用刀具让刀，中小型插齿机一般用工件让刀。在立式插齿机上，插齿刀装在刀具主轴上，同时作旋转运动和上下往复插削运动；工件装在工作台上，作旋转运动，工作台(或刀架)可横向移动实现径向切入运动。刀具回程时，刀架向后稍作摆动实现让刀运动（图1），或工作台作让刀运动。加工斜齿轮时，通过装在主轴上的附件（螺旋导轨）使插齿刀随上下运动而作相应的附加转动。20世纪60年代出现高速插齿机，其主要特点是采用硬质合金插齿刀，刀具主轴的冲程数高达2000次/分；采用静压轴承（见液体静压轴承）和静压滑块；由刀架摆动让刀，以减少冲击。卧式插齿机具有两个独立的刀具主轴，水平布置作交错往复运动，主要用来加工无空刀槽人字齿轮和各种轴齿轮等。此外，还有使用梳齿刀的插齿机，工作时梳齿刀作往复切削运动和让刀运动，工件作相应的转动，并在平行于梳齿刀节线方向上作直线运动，两者构成展成运动（见齿轮加工），工件的分齿是间歇的。
