生态系统生态系统ecosystem由生物群落（一定种类互相依存的动物、植物、微生物）及其生存环境共同组成的动态平衡系统。生物群落同其生存环境之间以及生物群落内不同种群生物之间不断进行着物质交换和能量流动，并处于互相作用和互相影响的动态平衡之中。生态系统可分为水生生态系统（海洋、湖泊、河流等）和陆生生态系统（森林、草原等），以及人工生态系统（城市、公园等）。在一个生态系统内，组成的生物种群和它们的相对数目在一定时期内保持或多或少相同。生态系统内生物种群之间的相互关系以一种网络形式出现，网络中的联系越多样、越复杂，系统也就越稳定。因为在这种情况下，当一个联系环节消失，它会被另一个取代，不会导致整个系统的瓦解。太阳能是驱动生态系统做功的最基本能源。组成生态系统的成员，根据它们在能量传递中的位置，分为生产者（绿色植物）、消费者（动物）、分解者（微生物）及非生物环境（物理环境）。在一个生态系统内，每一种群具有自己的生态位。生态位不仅指它所处的空间位置，也指它所执行的功能——它的食物，它的行动，它与其他种的关系等。每一个生态系统借助于其内稳定机制（抵抗改变的机制），有使自己保持稳定的趋势，这些机制调节营养物质的储存和释放、有机体的生长以及有机物质的产生和分解。像自然界任何现象和对象一样，生态系统是不断变化和发展的。当由于内部和外部的原因，一个生态系统被另一个生态系统取代时，就称为演替。根据古生生物、古环境以及与现代类似环境的生态系统的比较研究所提供的资料，可以概略将生态系统的进化划分为5个阶段。（见下表）表：生态系统进化阶段地球环境的不可逆变化和生物进化是驱动生态系统进化的基本因素。目前，生态系统的进化又加入了人类活动的因素，看来，未来的生态系统进化趋势主要取决于人类活动。当前人类活动正在导致环境的大改变和生物的大绝灭，这将引起生态系统的不可逆的改变，这关系到人类的命运。因此对地球生态系统进化历史及其规律的了解可能有助于掌握和控制生态系统的未来的进化。
